Is your dog afraid of the groomer? Stress-free grooming is possible
5 June 2026 · 5 min read

Can a dog be afraid of the groomer? Yes — and it's more common than you think. A bad memory, being rushed at previous visits, or simply a sensitive nature can make the salon stressful for some dogs.
The good news: grooming anxiety can be overcome. The key is an approach known abroad as fear-free grooming — working at the dog's pace, with breaks, rewards and no forceful restraint.
What does it look like in practice? First: an adaptation visit instead of a full groom to start. The dog explores the salon, its smells and sounds, with no procedure at all. Second: splitting grooming into stages — sometimes it's better to do less, calmly, than everything at once at the cost of trust. Third: owner honesty. Tick the box that your dog can be anxious or reactive — it's not a problem, it's information that lets us set the right pace.
What to avoid? Forcefully calming the dog before the visit (they sense your nerves), punishing fear, and high-throughput salons.
At Kudłate Cuda, grooming anxious dogs is our specialty — individual pace, quiet between stages, and as much time as the dog needs.
