Mats — how to prevent them

20 June 2026 · 3 min read

Mats form when loose, dead hair tangles with living coat. Beyond looking untidy, they can pull on the skin, cause pain and even sores.

The best prevention is regular brushing — especially in friction-prone areas: behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar. After a bath, a dog should be thoroughly dried and brushed, as wet coat mats faster.

If mats have already formed, don't force them apart — come to the salon and we'll choose a safe approach with your dog's comfort in mind.
