Summer grooming: should you cut your dog short?

10 June 2026 · 4 min read

Many owners think shaving a dog short in summer helps it cope with heat. In reality, for many breeds the coat insulates and protects the skin from the sun — cutting too short can do harm.

For double-coated dogs (e.g. huskies, golden retrievers), de-shedding the undercoat works better than shaving. For continuously growing coats, you can shorten the length while keeping skin protection.

In summer, paw, ear and eye hygiene matter especially, along with access to shade and water. If in doubt, we'll gladly tailor the care to your dog.
